Studs to DIN 938, 939, 835 and to drawing

Term explained

The most requested product at RS Randack, and what matters at the metal end

A stud is a rod threaded at both ends with an unthreaded shank in between. The metal end is screwed firmly into a housing, flange or cylinder, and the nut end takes the nut. Studs are used where a component has to be removed repeatedly without damaging the thread in the housing, or where a bolt with a head cannot be inserted: on pump and turbine casings, valves, cylinder heads, flanges and gearboxes. In enquiries to RS Randack, the stud is the most frequent product term.

3.2 inspection certificate with studs

The standards and the metal end

The length of the metal end depends on the material it is screwed into: the softer the housing material, the longer the thread.

  • DIN 938: Metal end 1 d, for steel.
  • DIN 939: Metal end 1.25 d, for cast iron.
  • DIN 835: Metal end 2 d, for aluminium and other light metals.
  • DIN 940: Metal end 2.5 d, for soft light metals.
  • DIN 2510: Studs with a reduced shank for reduced-shank bolted joints on pressure equipment and turbines.

The metal end has a tighter thread fit so that the stud stays in the housing when the nut is loosened. Studs to drawing deviate from the standard lengths and have collars, spigots, hexagon sockets for screwing in, or cross holes.

How RS Randack manufactures them

Made from quenched and tempered steel 5.6 to 12.9, from creep-resistant steels 21CrMoV5-7 and 40CrMoV4-6, stainless A2 and A4, duplex, nickel-based alloys and titanium; rolled threads, also after quenching and tempering; diameters typically up to M180, larger sizes on request. Marking on the end face, 3.1 or 3.2 inspection certificate, nuts from our own production with a joint certificate. Rush orders for overhauls and shutdowns are one of our strengths: in many cases, studs for power plants and chemical plants are shipped within 24 hours.

What you should specify
