What Bureau Veritas approval means for bolts, nuts and turned parts on board
Classification societies such as Bureau Veritas oversee the construction and operation of ships and offshore units. Parts relevant to classification may only come from approved manufacturers or must be inspected individually. For this purpose, Bureau Veritas distinguishes between types of approval: under Mode I, a surveyor from the society witnesses every test; under Mode II, the approved manufacturer may carry out the tests itself and issue the certificate, because its production and quality assurance have been assessed and are audited regularly. Mode II saves the purchaser time and inspection costs.
Scope of RS Randack’s approval
The Bureau Veritas approval covers screws, bolts, nuts and fasteners from M4 to M200 (scope of approval; production typically up to M180), as well as turned parts up to 300 mm in diameter and piece weights of up to around 250 kg. It is valid for several years and is renewed through audits; the certificate is available in the Downloads section. This also provides independent evidence of the sizes produced in Hagen.
What this means for you
For parts that, under the society’s rules, only require a manufacturer’s certificate, RS Randack supplies the documents from its own laboratory. Where the rules require inspection by a surveyor, for example for certain classes or at the customer’s request, it takes place as usual on site in Hagen. Other classification societies also approve the production, see the approval by DNV; further societies work with individual inspections, which RS Randack carries out regularly.
What you should specify
Classification society and class of the ship or unit, whether a manufacturer’s certificate is sufficient or a surveyor’s inspection is required, material and strength, drawing or standard, corrosion protection and marking.
