Nuclear power plants, decommissioning and interim storage: to KTA 1401, with our own qualification and documentation for each dimension
Nuclear facilities impose the strictest rules on fasteners: test scope and documentation follow the operator’s specification, often covering every part and every dimension, with every batch traceable back to the heat. RS Randack holds KTA 1401 qualification for the manufacture and trading of fasteners for nuclear facilities, namely screws, nuts, bolts and threaded rods, and produces these parts with its own forge, turning shop, thread rolling department and materials laboratory in Hagen. This also covers decommissioning, interim storage and research facilities.
Typical parts
- Hex head screws, socket head cap screws and studs to drawing in quenched and tempered steels and stainless steels
- Reduced-shank bolts and threaded studs for covers, flanges and valves, with spacer sleeves and nuts
- Threaded rods and anchor bolts with rolled threads for steel structures and anchoring within the plant
- Nuts and special nuts with cut threads and full marking
- Spare parts for overhauls, documented to the operator’s requirements
Requirements and documentation
- KTA 1401 qualification and dedicated procedures in order processing, from purchase order to certificate
- Non-destructive testing using magnetic particle or dye penetrant methods to the scope of the specification, often on all parts, ultrasonic testing of the raw material
- Dimensional inspection of almost all parts with a dimensional report covering every dimension, optical measuring machine for threads and contours
- Inspection certificate 3.1 or 3.2 witnessed by authorised inspectors, mill certificate for the heat, batch traceability back to the steel mill, archiving of records
- Coating partners audited by RS Randack, hydrogen de-embrittlement baking as specified

Frequently asked questions
Questions and answers about nuclear technology
Does RS Randack hold a valid approval to KTA 1401?
Yes, we hold the KTA 1401 qualification certificate for fasteners in nuclear facilities; the certificate and its validity period are shown on the Quality page.
Is every part tested for nuclear applications?
The scope is set by the operator’s specification, often non-destructive testing of all parts and a dimensional report for each part; mechanical properties per batch on a test bar from the same heat.
