Titanium bolts and titanium alloys
Half the weight of steel at the same strength
Term explained
Half the weight of steel at the same strength
Titanium has about half the density of steel and, as the alloy Ti6Al4V (3.7165, Grade 5), reaches strengths comparable to a quenched and tempered steel in property class 10.9. It also offers excellent corrosion resistance in seawater, chlorides and many acids, because a stable oxide layer forms on the surface. Commercially pure titanium in Grades 1 to 4 is softer and is used where corrosion resistance matters more than strength. RS Randack manufactures bolts, studs, nuts and turned parts in titanium to drawing.
Where titanium bolts are used
Aerospace and aero-engine construction, chemical and seawater plants, medical technology, motorsport, and anywhere weight matters or steel would corrode.
What matters in production
Titanium conducts heat poorly, tends to weld to the tool and work-hardens during forming; it requires sharp tools, low cutting speeds and good cooling. Chips are flammable and are collected separately. RS Randack rolls threads wherever the alloy allows; the compacted surface increases fatigue strength, which in titanium is particularly sensitive to notches. Crack testing using the dye penetrant method, material verification by tensile test, hardness and chemical analysis.
What you should specify
Grade or material number, delivery condition, standards or customer specification, tests, certificate type and quantity. Titanium raw material is procured for each order, so let us know your delivery date early.
