Works order and job card

The document that accompanies every lot through production

Term explained

The document that accompanies every lot through production

The works order, known on the shop floor as the job card, is the document that accompanies every lot at RS Randack from material withdrawal to packing. Production planning creates it for each order from the drawing, purchase order and specification: a header with order number, works order number, quantity, delivery date, third-party inspection, dimensions, drawing, material, heat and marking; below that, one line per operation with work station and specification.

What it specifies

Material and cut length with allowance, test bar, forging tool and cooling for each material, hardness range for heat treatment, pre-turning dimensions and pitch diameter for thread rolling, sequence of quenching and tempering, machining and rolling, marking, crack testing and its scope, coating, release by quality assurance, final inspection and packing. Complex new parts are preceded by a feasibility analysis that every department signs off.

What is reported back on it

Each operation is signed off with date and initials; measured values such as hardness, pitch diameter and actual dimensions are entered, and quantities and scrap are recorded for each operation. Final inspection checks that all operations have been signed off before a lot leaves the plant. This creates the chain that ends in the certificate and remains retrievable for ten years.

What this means for you

You will never receive a bolt whose route through production is not documented. Questions about a delivered lot can be traced back at any time to the works order and the heat via the order number on the delivery note.
