Socket head cap screws to DIN 912, ISO 4762 and to drawing

A socket head cap screw has a cylindrical head with a hexagon socket and is tightened with a hex key or a hex bit socket. Its advantage: the head can be recessed in a counterbore, the joint takes up little space and sits flush, and the hexagon socket allows high tightening torques. It is standardised as DIN 912 and ISO 4762, as DIN 6912 with a low head and key guide, and as DIN 7984 with a low head; in aerospace and mechanical engineering there are numerous drawing variants with an internal multi-tooth drive, collar or fitted shank. After the stud and the hex bolt, it is the third most frequently requested product at RS Randack.

Where socket head cap screws to drawing are needed

Machine tools and presses, gearboxes and couplings, hydraulics, rolling mills, marine engines, flanged joints with tight bolt spacing, rolling stock. Typical requirements are property classes 10.9 and 12.9, fine threads, large diameters up to M100 and beyond, special lengths, fitted shanks and special materials such as stainless steels or titanium.

How RS Randack manufactures them

The hexagon socket is hot formed in the die; this preserves the grain flow in the head, and the key engagement holds even at 12.9. For small quantities or special shapes, the head is turned and the hexagon socket is produced by EDM. Threads are rolled; quenching and tempering and coating are carried out by qualified partners and tested in our own laboratory; for 12.9, surface inspection to ISO 6157-3 applies, and electroplated zinc coatings are only applied at the customer’s express request because of the risk of hydrogen embrittlement. Marking with property class and manufacturer’s mark on the head, 3.1 or 3.2 certificate.
